SDA’s mission is to create homes that are affordable, ecological & empowering, by working with developers and community based organizations on projects that address social and environmental issues. Our principals excel at working directly with communities, residents, resident managers and development staff to produce beautiful, high-quality buildings that are rooted in contemporary and contextual design traditions.  Located in Alameda in the East Bay, we serve the entire San Francisco Bay Area.

SDA is not a typical architectural firm in that our personal commitment to affordable housing extends beyond the workplace. We are committed advocates of affordable housing in the East Bay, and believe that volunteerism is an essential component in forwarding that cause. Both principals sit on the boards of local non-profit developers and are familiar with the struggles that non-profit developers face.

Currently we are working on a townhome development for Habitat For Humanity East Bay, and the adaptive re-use of existing single family homes into supportive studio units for East Bay Community Recovery Project.  We are the subconsultant project architect for a 72-unit development in Oakland that has completed design and will start construction soon.  We're also designing the rehabilitation of an outdated parking garage for Allied Housing to become supportive services offices and the community gathering space for an associated apartment building.
